50 Shades of Green 💚: Sustainability starts with intentional design

Love Paper Week is a global initiative that celebrates the sustainability, versatility and effectiveness of paper, championed by Two Sides, an organisation dedicated to promoting the positive environmental story of print, paper and packaging.

As proud members of Two Sides, our support comes naturally. We don’t just love paper, we believe in it.

Designing with intention means thinking about longevity from the very beginning.

When we talk about sustainability, we usually start with materials. But the real impact of a product is decided much earlier, at the design stage. Sustainability isn’t just about what something is made from, it’s about why it exists, how it’s used, and how long it stays in circulation.

A product designed to be used again and again – even if it’s made from plastic – can be more sustainable than an item made from a “greener” material that’s used once and thrown away. Longevity reduces the need for replacement, lowers overall resource consumption, and keeps items out of landfill.

A great example is reusable drinkware. When designed well, sturdy, functional, and visually appealing, these products become part of someone’s daily routine. They live on desks, in kitchens, in bags. They’re kept, reused, and relied on. That repeated use is where the sustainability really adds up.

The same applies to promotional and branded items. Thoughtful design can turn something from a disposable freebie into a keeper. A beautifully designed notebook that people actually want to write in. A tote bag that’s strong enough to replace plastic carrier bags. A piece of homeware that looks good enough to stay on a shelf rather than be tucked away in a drawer.

Intentional design also means designing for emotional value. When something looks good, feels good, and serves a genuine purpose, people are far more likely to keep it in their homes and use it for longer. Emotional attachment is a powerful sustainability tool, the longer something is valued, the longer its life cycle becomes.

Sustainable design is about asking better questions:

  • Will this be used more than once?
  • Does it serve a real purpose?
  • Is it well made and desirable enough to keep?
  • Could this replace something disposable in someone’s daily life?

By designing for longevity, rather than short-term use , we create products that earn their place, reduce waste, and make sustainability a natural part of everyday living.

Let’s compare

Below we’ve compared some everyday products which do you think are more sustainable?
