Different printing techniques for printed shipping boxes

At Print.com, we offer a range of options for printing on shipping boxes. Depending on your design and requirements, you can choose from three printing techniques that perfectly suit your needs:

  1. Screen printing for shipping boxes
Screen printing is a popular choice for printing on shipping boxes in larger runs. This technique allows you to personalise your boxes with a logo or simple design. The boxes are made from sturdy kraft, black or white E-flute cardboard and are available in various sizes, such as 225 x 150 x 90 mm. Screen printing offers a durable solution for shipping boxes featuring your own logo. Perfect for businesses wishing to personalise their parcels.
  2. Digital printing for shipping boxes
Do you want to remain flexible with your designs or work with smaller print runs? Then opt for digital printing. This technique allows you to print full-colour designs onto shipping boxes. Ideal for creative and detailed prints. You can choose from sizes such as 225 x 150 x 90 mm. Screen printing offers a durable solution for shipping boxes featuring your own logo. Perfect for businesses looking to give their parcels a professional look.
  3. Offset printing for high-quality shipping boxes
Offset printing is the perfect choice if you’re looking for premium printed shipping boxes. This technique produces high-quality, detailed prints. It’s ideal for larger products such as American-style folding boxes. These sturdy boxes are made from 3 mm EE corrugated board and are available in various sizes. Personalising shipping boxes with offset printing gives them a luxurious look and is perfect for businesses that want to emphasise their brand.

Frequently asked questions about printing on shipping boxes

Which printing technique is best suited to my design?

That depends on your print run, the type of design and the desired effect.

Screen printing is suitable for simple designs in a single PMS colour. Think of a logo on the top of a box. It’s a durable technique, ideal for larger print runs and crisp, single-colour prints. Good to know: only the top side is printed.

Digital printing is perfect if you’re using multiple colours, illustrations or patterns. Need full-colour printing for small to medium print runs? Then digital printing is always the right choice. An added bonus: you can choose between single-sided (4/0) or double-sided (4/4) printing.

Offset printing is ideal for larger print runs and if you’re looking for premium quality. This technique produces a crisp, razor-sharp print, even with detailed images. Think of product boxes or American-style folding boxes that need to catch the eye.

In short:
– One colour, large quantities? Screen printing.
– Full colour in small print runs? Digital.
– High quality, large print runs? Offset.

What is the difference between the materials used for shipping boxes?

At Print.com, we use different types of corrugated cardboard, depending on the type of box and the printing technique. But what exactly is the difference?

E-flute cardboard is 1.4 to 1.5 mm thick. It is lightweight, sturdy and suitable for small to medium-sized products. The boxes stack well and are easy to print on — particularly with digital or screen printing. This cardboard is used for standard shipping boxes and is available with a white, black or kraft exterior.

EE corrugated cardboard is 3 mm thick and consists of two layers of corrugated cardboard. This construction makes the box extra strong and suitable for heavier or larger products. You’ll find this material used in American-style folding boxes. Less suitable for fine detail, but ideal for bulk dispatch or when extra protection is required.

Furthermore, the appearance depends on the lamination. For example, some boxes are laminated with silk MC and finished with a gloss varnish coating for a luxurious look.

How do I determine the correct size of shipping box?

Start with your product. The internal dimensions of the box should be just slightly larger than the item you’re putting inside. Large enough for a secure fit, but not so spacious that the item can slide around. Don’t forget to factor in any padding, such as tissue paper or protective material.

In the ordering app, you’ll find different sizes for each type of box: – Standard shipping boxes: ranging from small (225 x 150 x 90 mm) to spacious (610 x 370 x 140 mm)
– Digital shipping boxes: often slightly more compact, for example 215 x 155 x 100 mm
– American folding boxes: sturdy and large — suitable for bulk or heavy items

Can’t decide between two sizes? It’s better to choose the slightly larger one and fill the space with protective material. This prevents damage and ensures a neat, tidy package.
Also check the external dimensions when sending via parcel services. Sometimes a surcharge applies for certain dimensions. You can avoid this by choosing wisely.

And would you like to test it beforehand? Request an unprinted sample via the ordering app. That way, you can be sure everything fits.

What’s the difference between PMS and full-colour printing?

At Print.com, you can choose between PMS or full-colour printing, depending on your design and the result you want.

PMS (Pantone Matching System) is a colour system with fixed values. This ensures you always get exactly the same colour, regardless of the material or printing technique. Handy if you have a specific corporate colour. PMS is particularly suitable for simple, single-colour designs — such as a logo on kraft card. It is often used in combination with screen printing.

Full colour consists of CMYK printing (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). This method is ideal for colourful illustrations, photographs or designs with colour gradients. You can choose between 4/0 (outer side only) or 4/4 (both inner and outer sides). Full colour works well with digital or offset printing, depending on the print run.

Please note:
– PMS = exact colour result, limited to 1 or 2 colours
– Full colour = suitable for anything with lots of colour and imagery

Not sure? In the ordering app, you can see exactly which printing method suits your box type and design. That way, you’ll always make the right choice.
