Monomer, polymer or cast vinyl: which one would you choose?

Whether you’re sticking something on a window, highlighting a temporary promotion, or transforming a vehicle into a mobile billboard, you start with the right vinyl. And that’s easier said than done. Monomer, polymer, cast… What do those terms actually mean? And more importantly: which one is best suited to your application?

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the three most common types of vinyl. So you can confidently apply the right one.

Monomer vinyl: basic and budget-proof 

We’ll kick things off with a classic among vinyls: monomer. Monomer vinyl is an excellent choice for shorter projects that don’t have to break the bank. This vinyl is slightly thicker and stiffer than other types, making it especially suitable for flat surfaces. Think of temporary promotions on windows or panels, indoor campaigns, or short-term outdoor advertising.

Is the application temporary and doesn’t need the vinyl to last for years? Then monomer is a practical choice. Monomer vinyl is easy to apply, affordably priced, and perfect for smooth, flat surfaces. Be careful: as soon as you try to turn a corner or encounter a bumpy surface, monomer will stop working.

Polymer vinyl: the flexible all-rounder

Polymer vinyl is constructed just a little bit smarter than monomer. Thanks to its longer molecular chains, this vinyl is more flexible, more stable, and longer-lasting. It’s easy to apply to both flat and slightly curved surfaces. Handy if you want to cover a window, need outdoor signage, or for a promotion on an illuminated lightbox.

A polymer vinyl is the ideal compromise: robust and durable. Perfect for projects that need to last for several years without compromising on appearance.

Cast vinyl: sticking without limits

Time for some serious work? Then cast vinyl is the answer. This film (as the name suggests) is not rolled, but cast. This makes the film super thin and extremely flexible. It easily conforms to complex shapes, seams, and ridges. Ideal for car wraps or long-lasting outdoor advertising on facades, for example.

Cast vinyl is your go-to if you really want to get the most out of your project. Maximum adhesion, minimal shrinkage, and suitable for applications that last for years.

Not every vinyl fits into a box

Some vinyls stick without adhesive. Others adhere effortlessly to metal. Or they are made of smart, sustainable materials. They can’t be pigeonholed into one of the three standard categories: monomeric, polymeric, or cast. That’s why there are also vinyls for your outside-the-line projects.

  Penstick 4152 WHS (white) or CLS (transparent) adheres statically to smooth surfaces, such as glass. No glue is needed. Ideal for temporary promotions or if you want to change them regularly. 
• Magnetic sheets 
  Sticks without adhesive. This material ‘clicks’ securely onto metal and are easy to change. Available in 3 thicknesses: 0.30, 0.60, and 0.85 mm.
• PVC-free vinyls
  Such as Lintec, YupoTako, YupoJelly or Orajet 3174. The environmentally friendly alternatives, without compromising on quality.
• Special finishes
  Holographic, Sparkle Dots, or floor films like Alufloor. For those who really want to stand out with something special.
